I mention this only because I set up #1 on the list, Basecamp, for use by our John Ben Snow research team (headed by Pamela J. Shoemaker) at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, Syracuse University.

We use Basecamp to manage all of our projects, including conference and journal papers, experiments, office and administration projects, and as a way to create a private area for hired research assistants to manage and supervise their work activities. It’s been a great success for us.
